Britain starts housing asylum seekers in containers to reduce costs,

The United Kingdom has begun moving some asylum seekers into residential containers on its south coast as part of plans to use cheaper alternatives to hotels as temporary accommodation while asylum claims are processed.

The government says more than 50,000 asylum seekers who have arrived by barge across the English Channel are currently living in hotels while waiting for their asylum claim to be processed in the UK.

The plan to use containers and unused military facilities has been accompanied by protests from politicians and humanitarian associations, reports Al Jazeera. They have described the accommodation for people coming from countries like Iraq, Iran, Syria, Afghanistan or Albania as inhumane.

" The people being loaded into the Bibby Stockholm container have escaped the worst horrors in the world. "Storing" them on these floating barges is a shameful way to treat human beings. Today is a black day for our country ," said Bell Ribeiro-Addy, a politician from the opposition Labor Party.

Defense Minister Sarah Dines told Sky News on Monday that the containers were part of a plan to increase the number of residences the government can use to house migrants, after the hotel bill rose to 6 million pounds ($7.7 million ) in day.

" Asylum seekers will have adequate housing, but not luxury," she said.

The government has said that Bibby Stockholm will accommodate only single men and will offer accommodation "with basic and functional conditions", along with health care insurance, hotel services and on-board security.

On Monday, about 50 migrants moved into the floating container. A person familiar with the situation said they started moving there around noon.
