Slovenia asks for help from NATO and the EU after the extraordinary weather with heavy downpours and floods. The damages caused amount to several hundred million euros.
After the great floods in Slovenia, this country has requested the help of NATO and the EU. Slovenia needs heavy military helicopters with a carrying capacity of 5 tons for transport and 200 soldiers for disaster protection and rescue duties. From the EU, Slovenia requires 30 rescue excavators and 30 special water control machines and engineers.
Meanwhile, evacuations have begun after the destruction of a dam on the Mur River. 500 people had to leave the village of Bistrica quickly, local media reported. But other areas are also at risk, according to the natural disaster protection authority.
This is the biggest natural disaster in the history of the new Balkan state, which became independent in 1991 from the former Yugoslavia. Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob estimated the damage at more than 500 million euros. The road infrastructure, the energy infrastructure as well as several hundreds of buildings were mostly damaged. Many Slovenian villages have been isolated after the disaster. Rescuers deliver food by helicopter. High soil moisture increases the probability of landslides, according to the Geological Survey of Slovenia. Even in Austria, massive landslides threaten mountain slopes after heavy rains. The most affected by bad weather are Kärnten and Steiermark./DW
