British Royal Air Force (RAF) fighter jets have shot down and intercepted drones heading towards Jordan and Bahrain, in what is considered Britain's first direct participation in military operations in the Middle East.
According to the British Ministry of Defense, RAF Typhoon jets carried out military operations overnight to protect Jordan and Bahrain. The ministry also released a video on the X platform showing the moment a drone was shot down.
According to British authorities, fighter jets shot down a drone heading towards Jordan, while intercepting another drone heading towards Bahrain. At the same time, defensive air missions are also being carried out to support the United Arab Emirates.
The decision for military intervention comes after British Prime Minister Keir Starmer reversed his previous stance and gave the green light for defensive action against Iranian missiles and drones.
US bombers arrive in Britain
Meanwhile, three US B-52 Stratofortress strategic bombers of the US Armed Forces have arrived at an RAF air base in Fairford, Gloucestershire.
The planes landed in Britain after the US president warned Tehran that a "major strike" was coming. The American flag was visible in the cockpit of one of the bombers, and the plane was nicknamed the "Iron Butterfly".
This bomber model was also used during American operations in Iraq in 2003, including the bombing of Saddam Hussein's palace in Baghdad.
One of the planes was also engraved with the "Bomber Barons" symbol, the nickname of the 23rd Bomber Squadron of the US Air Force.
Over the weekend, American B-1 bombers also arrived at the same RAF base.
Strategic bombers of this type, which can cost up to $2 billion each, are capable of carrying out very long-range missions, carrying some of the most destructive missiles in the US military arsenal.
