US President Donald Trump, in an exclusive interview today with NBC News, called the elevation of Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of the late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, to the new post of Supreme Leader of Iran a "big mistake."
"I think they made a big mistake. I don't know if it's going to last. I think they made a mistake," Trump said during the interview.
This comment comes just a day after Iran's Assembly of Experts officially appointed Mojtaba Khamenei (56 years old) as successor to his father, who was killed in a joint US-Israeli airstrike on February 28, 2026 in Tehran.
The appointment of Mojtaba Khamenei is seen as a signal that the regime's hardline remains in place, despite the ongoing war with the US and Israel.
Trump had earlier warned that the election of Mojtaba Khamenei would be "unacceptable" to the US and that any new leader would need to receive American "approval" to survive. He also reiterated that he "won't last long" without Washington's support.
Israel, on the other hand, has openly stated that it will target any successor to Ali Khamenei, making this appointment a direct challenge to military pressure from the West.
