An incredible tragedy occurred at a wedding in Chad, when a guest who participated in the shooting during the celebration fatally wounded the groom, subsequently causing widespread clashes between the two families.
The incident occurred in the village of Amdirib, in the Batha region.
According to local media, the guest arrived at the wedding venue on a motorbike and was carrying an automatic weapon, which he raised in the air to shoot as a sign of respect for the groom. But the weapon misfired and a bullet grazed the groom in the chest.
At first, the perpetrator did not understand what had happened, until the voices of those present made him turn around and realize his mistake.
His death sparked a violent confrontation between the two families, which escalated into a bloody incident with 57 deaths.
Despite bans in some areas and repeated warnings from authorities, shooting in the air is still part of traditional celebrations in many rural communities in Chad.
Similar incidents have occurred in other countries, from India to Serbia, with deadly results. In the US alone, between 1985 and 1992, 118 people were injured by "blind" bullets falling from the sky, of whom 38 died.
