After the robbery, another scandal is recorded at the Louvre; hundreds of books

A water leak in late November damaged several hundred works in the Egyptian department of the Louvre.

The Paris museum announced the news on Tuesday, weeks after the jewelry theft that raised concerns about the Louvre's infrastructure and security.

The museum's deputy administrator, Francis Steinbock, said the water leak was discovered on November 26 and up to 400 works have been damaged.

Among them are Egyptological journals and scientific documentation that have been used by researchers.

"Between 300 and 400 books" were affected by the leak, explained Francis Steinbock, the museum's deputy director general, adding that they were "Egyptological journals" and "scientific documentation" used by researchers.

These bound books date from the late 19th to early 20th centuries.

“No books of cultural value were touched,” he stressed, explaining that “so far we have no irreparable and final losses in these collections.” These are “extremely useful and very frequently read documents.” “They will be dried, sent to a bookbinder for repair and then returned to the shelves,” Francis Steinbock added.

The incident follows a robbery in October, where a gang of four people raided the world's most visited art museum in broad daylight, stealing jewelry worth an estimated $102 million in just seven minutes before escaping.

This led to a debate over the museum's aging infrastructure.
