In a series of posts on his social network X, Elon Musk has launched another direct attack on the European Union, calling it a "bureaucracy" incapable of representing the interests of citizens and a threat to the continent's freedoms.
“The European Union is not a democracy – sovereignty of the people – but a bureaucracy – sovereignty of the unelected bureaucrat!” Musk wrote, adding: “Many politicians in Europe are traitors to their people.”
But what at first glance may seem like the personal rhetoric of an eccentric billionaire, in fact clearly aligns with the new official line of American foreign policy, recently formalized in the US National Security Strategy document.
This document emphasizes that Europe is no longer an undisputed priority for the US, and speaks of the need for European allies to “carry more weight on their shoulders” in its defense. Moreover, it describes the continent as an “area in cultural and identity crisis”, where mass migration and declining birth rates constitute “threats to civilizational survival”.
The US appears to be shifting its focus from the Atlantic to the Western Hemisphere (Latin America and the US), while the EU faces growing distrust from transatlantic allies and public criticism like Musk's, which are increasingly common in conservative American circles today.
