Investigators have focused on several videos that appear to have recorded the final moments of the flight: the footage shows the plane breaking into several pieces, indicating that it was destroyed in mid-air. It is not yet known whether this was due to a serious mechanical failure, perhaps during a repair, or whether it was hit by a missile or drone, given the tensions in the region. A third hypothesis is not ruled out, that of explosives placed on board.
The plane took off from Ganja International Airport in Azerbaijan at 2:19 p.m. local time (11:19 a.m. Eastern time) on Tuesday, November 11. According to Flightradar24, the C-130 reached an altitude of about 24,000 feet at 2:41 p.m. The last signal was recorded at 2:49 p.m. 20 seconds later, when the plane was traveling at about 320 mph (519 km/h).
“Our C-130 military plane, which took off from Azerbaijan and was bound for Turkey, crashed on the border between Georgia and Azerbaijan,” the Turkish Defense Ministry confirmed. “Search and rescue operations have already begun in cooperation with relevant authorities.”
In the analyzed images, the central part of the aircraft's fuselage is visible, the one with the wings, which clearly matches the shape of a C-130. However, the front part (cabin and cargo compartment) and the rear part (tail and rear cargo compartment) are missing.
The C-130 aircraft is manufactured by the American company Lockheed Martin and is widely used by air forces around the world to transport troops, equipment and military vehicles. It has four turboprop engines and can take off and land even on difficult runways.
The crashed plane was built in 1968 and originally served in the Saudi Arabian armed forces. According to air force records, it was inducted into the Turkish fleet in March 2010./Corriere Della Sera
