United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, at a press conference held on the Egyptian side of the Rafah border crossing on Friday, stressed the critical importance of sending aid to the Gaza Strip, saying that vehicles carrying supplies "are not just trucks , they are a lifeline".

According to the UN, 219 trucks are currently waiting at the Rafah border crossing - 115 belonging to the Egyptian Red Crescent Society and 104 containing aid originating from other countries.
The main hurdle to opening the crossing is creating a verification mechanism that will guarantee delivery and prevent it from being accidentally messed up as trucks move into Gaza, said UN secretary-general's spokesman Stephane Dujarric.
Creating a verification mechanism is proving to be very complicated, Dujarric said. The Israelis intend to monitor goods entering Gaza, but the challenges lie in determining where and how this might happen.
