New evidence has emerged revealing dramatic scenes from the serious incident that shook the center of Modena, Italy, where a high-speed car ran over pedestrians on the sidewalk, while its driver then attempted to attack citizens with a knife.
According to Italian authorities, seven people were injured, two of them in a very serious condition. The most serious victim is a woman, who according to witnesses lost both legs after the violent collision.
The incident took place on Via Emilia Centro, in the heart of the city of Modena. Witnesses said the car drove at high speed onto the pavement, first hitting a bicycle and then a group of pedestrians.
" We saw people flying in the air. The car suddenly accelerated and crashed into the pavement at at least 100 kilometers per hour ," witnesses told Italian media.
After the collision, the driver of the vehicle got out of the car and attempted to flee. According to witnesses, he was carrying a knife and attacked a citizen who tried to stop him.
Luca Signorelli, one of the people who followed the author, recounted the dramatic moments of the chase.
" I was trying to help the woman who had lost her legs when he ran away. I followed him with 4-5 other people. He hid behind some cars and suddenly came out with a knife in his hand. He was saying something, but it wasn't Italian ," he declared, while his head was still bleeding from the wounds he received during the fight.
According to Signorelli, the perpetrator attempted to stab him during the fight, but citizens managed to neutralize him until the police arrived.
The mayor of Modena, Massimo Mezzetti, publicly thanked the citizens who intervened to stop the perpetrator.
" He was armed with a knife. These citizens showed courage and high civic sense in a dramatic moment ," Mezzetti declared.
The perpetrator has been detained by the police and is being questioned. According to Italian media, he is an Italian citizen of about 30 years old of foreign origin, born and raised in the Modena area and with no criminal record.
The mayor said investigations are continuing to understand the nature of the incident.
" It is a very serious act. If it turns out to be an assassination, then the situation becomes even more serious ," he declared.
The area where the incident occurred has been surrounded by police, while ambulances, carabinieri, Guardia di Finanza and numerous police forces intervened at the scene.
