A serious incident shook the center of Modena in Italy, after a car traveling at high speed went onto the sidewalk and hit several pedestrians, leaving at least seven injured, four of them in serious condition.
According to Italian media, the incident took place on Via Emilia, near Largo Porta Bologna, in one of the busiest areas of the city. Witnesses said the car deliberately drove onto the sidewalk and hit people at very high speed.
" We saw people flying in the air. The car suddenly accelerated and went onto the sidewalk ," witnesses told local media.
After the collision, the vehicle crashed into a store window. A woman was seriously injured and, according to preliminary reports, lost both legs in the impact.
The driver of the vehicle, a 31-year-old Italian of Moroccan origin, attempted to flee on foot after the accident. During the pursuit, he pulled out a knife and injured a passerby who had tried to stop him.
Luca Signorelli, one of the citizens who helped neutralize the perpetrator, testified that he was attacked with a knife during the fight.
" He hit me twice, once near the heart and another in the head. I managed to block his hand and neutralize him with the help of other people ," he said.
According to authorities, four or five citizens followed the perpetrator and assisted the police in his arrest near the intersection between Via Pioppa and Corso Adriano.
Numerous police forces, ambulances and the mayor of Modena, Massimo Mezzetti, arrived at the scene, who described the event as "extremely serious".
" We need to understand the nature of this act. If it is an assassination, then it is even more serious ," he declared.
Italian police have launched investigations to clarify the motives of the perpetrator, who according to preliminary data appears to have no criminal record.
The incident has caused great shock in the city, while authorities are verifying whether it was a deliberate act or for other motives.
