Macabre violence against the Serbian politician Nikola Sandulović, the EU

Peter Stano, the spokesperson of the European Commission, has commented on the alleged case of torture and kidnapping of the Serbian opposition politician, Nikola Sandulović, saying that they are in contact with Belgrade, but need the full facts.

When asked if the Commission would take any action against Serbia regarding the situation, Stano did not answer directly. Instead, he told Euronews Albania, we have seen reports about the alleged arrest and ill-treatment of Sandulović.

He added that the Commission is following the case closely and is in contact with the authorities and the parties involved. However, it is important to have complete knowledge about this case.

"We expect the rights of all citizens to be respected. Any arrest must be based on reasonable suspicion of a crime, and any credible allegation of violence must be pursued by the appropriate authorities ," Stano said.

Sandulović was arrested at his home on January 3 by Security and Information Agency (BIA) agents after apologizing for crimes committed by Serbia against ethnic Albanians during Kosovo's 1998-99 war for independence.

According to social media posts, there was no news of Sandulović until he was found in the intensive care unit at the VMA military hospital in Belgrade on January 4.

He remains in prison and is currently denied access to independent medical care. His legal team has filed an urgent case with the United Nations Committee Against Torture, demanding his immediate release, protection for him and his family, and the withdrawal of all charges against him.
