Jewish, gay and the youngest prime minister in history; who is Gabriel Attal,
Gabriel Attal and Macron

In just 10 years, France's newly appointed prime minister, Gabriel Attal, has risen from an experienced novice at the Ministry of Health to the country's second most important position.

Attal is the youngest prime minister in the modern history of France, only 34 years old. He is even younger than Socialist Laurent Fabius, who was 37 when he was appointed by François Mitterrand in 1984. He is also the first openly gay leader of the French government.

As The Guardian writes, this is a spectacular trajectory, even for someone from a privileged background like Attal, for whom any career progression has seemed too easy.

In the early years of Emmanuel Macron's presidency, Attal was one of a group of well-educated young men chosen to advise and support the equally young French leader.

Attal was known for his willingness to speak openly on any topic, while he was also known for his intelligent and sharp remarks as well as excellent metaphors, Telegrafi reports.

Exceptional communication skills and the ability to think and quickly answer questions in parliament and in public earned him the nickname "sniper".

Attal is the son of Yves Attal, a Tunisian-Jewish lawyer and film producer who died in 2015, and Marie de Couriss, who comes from an Orthodox Christian family from Odessa, Ukraine. He grew up in Paris with three younger sisters and used the full name Gabriel Attal de Couriss.

In 2019, Attal stated that his father had told him that he may be Orthodox, but "I've felt Jewish all my life."

He was educated at a private school attended by the children of high-profile parents in politics and art in Paris, where English is compulsory from primary level.

After graduation, he entered the prestigious Institute of Political Sciences in Paris and completed his master's degree in public affairs.

According to friends, his political ambition was sparked when he took part in demonstrations against the extremist, Jean-Marie Le Pen, when the right-wing leader entered the second round of the 2002 presidential election with Jacques Chiracun. He joined the Socialist Party in 2006 and supported its presidential candidate, Segolene Royal in the 2007 elections.

In 2012, when he was doing an internship in the cabinet of the then Minister of Health, Marisol Touraine, the mother of a school friend, he was hired by that ministry, only at the age of 23.

Touraine described him as "a smart, understanding man", predicting "an excellent career and a bright future".

He left the Socialist Party in 2016 to join Macron's newly formed centrist political party.

Since then, his rise in politics has been as unstoppable and rapid as Macron's.

At the age of 29, he was appointed Secretary of State in the Ministry of Education, becoming the youngest member of the government under the Fifth Republic, which came into force in October 1958.

He held several high-profile political posts in Macron's party, government spokesman, minister of public finance and minister of education. In June last year, he became a member of the French National Parliament.

Attal is in a relationship with Stephane Sejourne, 38, a member of the European Parliament and secretary general of the ruling party, now called Renaissance, who was Macron's political adviser until 2021.

In the last decade, Attal's political position seems to have changed from center-left to center-right.

In 2018, he responded to strikes by employees of the national railway company, saying that France must "get out of the strike culture" and students protesting changes to the education system as "selfish members of the bourgeoisie".

Macron, once known as the "golden boy" of French politics because of his youth, dynamism and ambition, will rely on the young, dynamic and ambitious Attal to strengthen the government weakened by the lack of a parliamentary majority and to win members of the young generation of voters disillusioned for the European Parliament elections.

According to a recent opinion poll, it is suggested that he will be popular as the head of the French government, with 36 percent of those who think he will make a good prime minister.
