Violence against students in Novi Sad, Vučić defends the aggressors: The
The clash in Novi Sad

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has defended the students' attackers, hours after the incidents that took place in Novi Sad, where the 200th anniversary of Matica Srpska was celebrated. Students were attacked near the Serbian National Theater by a group of people affiliated with the SNS, in the presence of police forces, who did not intervene to prevent the clash.

The students even told reporters that when the clash began, the police thought they were a bigger problem than "a group of SNS" who raped, threatened and insulted students.

At a press conference in front of the Rectorate building of the University of Novi Sad, one of the students with a head injury said he was hit only because he intervened when a girl was threatened by a group of men.

"Women were threatened, told they deserved to be raped. SNS thugs attacked us. I tried to protect a student who was being attacked, when the thug hit me in the head," said one of the students.

He claims that the police did not react the entire time the students were attacked by thugs.

One of the attacked students said that a man punched her in the face, knocked her to the ground, and started kicking her.

A student also spoke about the events before the celebration of the 200th anniversary of Matica Srpska, noting that SNS members backed her against the wall and she was hit by at least three men.

But all the students' complaints have been dismissed by a reaction from Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić. He even considered the students' behavior disgusting, accusing them of attacking "the foundations of the Serbian state and the church."

"The word 'forgive me' is a noble word and it is always good when someone apologizes," said Aleksandar Vučić in an interview with TV Pink.

"Last night, people saw that in no Serbian holiday, from Vidovdan until today, have there been direct attacks on the foundations of the Serbian state, the Serbian church, and, most importantly, they attack all Serbian values, our tradition and culture, everything that is important for a Serb," Vučić said.

He assessed that Matica Srpska has always protected the people and strived for unification, but "someone tried to prevent this event."

"This is not an attack on Vučić or an attack on state institutions. This is an attack on our state, our church and our society and all our values, our lives. A senseless, terrible attack, that you cannot understand how it is possible that some people do not understand and do not see," the Serbian president said.
