New York City's air pollution ranked as the worst of any city in the world on Wednesday as wildfire smoke from Canada continued to drift over the area, creating a second day of orange haze over the city and causing some residents to to wear face masks outside.
The Federal Aviation Administration on Wednesday grounded several flights to New York's LaGuardia Airport because of the smoke.
New York City had the worst air quality of any major city in the world on Wednesday. Second worst was Lahore, Pakistan, while the next worst major US city, Detroit, Michigan, came in 13th. Delhi, India, which consistently ranks among the worst cities for air pollution, was sixth worst.

The smell of smoke was noticeable in New York on Tuesday evening as the sky turned orange-brown and visibility dwindled before sunset.

In New York City, schools canceled all outdoor events and residents were encouraged to wear face masks, which many had discarded as the coronavirus pandemic faded.

"We recommend that all New Yorkers limit outdoor activity to the greatest extent possible," said Mayor Eric Adams.
"Those with existing respiratory problems, such as heart or breathing problems, as well as children and older adults, may be particularly susceptible and should stay indoors at this time."
Adams said air conditions were expected to worsen during Wednesday afternoon and evening.
