Another disaster in Ukraine, Russia blows up the world's largest ammonia

After the explosion of the dam in the city of Kherson, fears of another environmental disaster in Ukraine have increased, as the world's largest ammonia pipeline located in Kharkiv was bombed today by Russia.

Pro-Moscow sources released footage showing a cloud of gas dispersing over a forested area near the town of Masyutivka, which lies in the "grey zone" between the Russian and Ukrainian borders and houses a pumping station for the Tolyatti-Odessa pipeline.

Ammonia is a key component of nitrate fertilizers, and Russia is one of its leading producers worldwide. But it is also extremely toxic and can cause severe irritation to the lungs, throat, nose and eyes, causing serious health problems for people who may be exposed to it.

Moscow said on Wednesday that a "group of Ukrainian saboteurs" blew up the pipeline. Meanwhile, Kiev blamed Russian troops but said any damage to the pipeline was a "consequence of war" and that the pipeline had been damaged by repeated Russian shelling.

It seems that Ukraine's worst fears are coming true, it remains to be hoped that the Russians will not continue with their madness and attack the Zapozhizhia nuclear power plant.
