US President Donald Trump announced that he had a "good and very productive" phone conversation with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, shortly before a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at Mar-a-Lago, Florida.
"Just had a good and very productive phone call with President Putin of Russia prior to my meeting, at 1:00 PM today, with President Zelensky of Ukraine," Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Meanwhile, the meeting with Zelensky is expected to take place in the main dining room at Mar-a-Lago, while journalists will follow the event.
The phone call with Putin came as Russian missile and drone attacks were underway over Kiev, adding pressure to the situation and giving urgency to the negotiations.
Trump and Putin last spoke in October and agreed to hold a summit in Budapest. However, a few days later, Trump abruptly canceled the meeting, declaring it would be a “waste of time.”
