Reza Pahlavi, the son of the last Shah of Iran, overthrown by the 1979 Islamic Revolution, called on US President Donald Trump to make good on his threats and intervene militarily in Iran to "save the people" from the regime of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
In an interview with Reuters on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, where Iranian officials have been barred from attending, Pahlavi stated that there are signs that the Iranian government is on the verge of collapse and that an external attack could weaken or accelerate its downfall.
" It's a matter of time. We hope that such an attack will accelerate the process and the people can return to the streets to complete the final overthrow of the regime ," he said.
Pahlavi, who lives in the United States and has spent most of his life outside Iran, said Iranian citizens were facing severe repression, citing a wave of arrests and a campaign of intimidation last month that saw thousands detained in an effort to prevent further protests.
The demonstrations began on December 28 as peaceful protests in Tehran's Grand Bazaar due to economic hardship and then spread to other cities in the country.
The Iranian opposition remains fragmented among rival ideological groups and factions, including pro-Pahlavi monarchists, who have no visible organized structure within the country.
Last month, in an interview with Reuters, President Trump appeared reserved about the level of support that Pahlavi enjoys within Iran.
However, Pahlavi argued that negotiations with Tehran will not bring results. “ Citizens hope that at some point it will be decided that there is no point in continuing negotiations. This is the moment for the US to intervene and do what President Trump has promised. Intervention is a way to save lives ,” he declared.
