From tropical frogs to Siberian prison: the substance suspected in Navalny's death...
Alexei Navalny, the Russian opposition leader who lost his life two years ago in a high-security prison in Siberia, was most likely poisoned with a very powerful toxic substance and did not die of natural causes, as Russian authorities claimed.
This is the conclusion reached by five Western governments (the United Kingdom, Sweden, France, Germany and the Netherlands), based on laboratory analyses carried out on samples taken from his body.
In a joint statement, published on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, the foreign ministers of these countries announced that tests conclusively confirmed the presence of traces of epibatidine, a highly toxic substance found in the skin of some species of South American poison dart frogs and not found naturally in Russia.
What is epibatidine?
Epibatidine is a natural alkaloid first discovered in the 1990s from frogs known as “poison dart frogs.” It is considered one of the most potent natural toxins known.
The substance acts on the nicotinic receptors of the nervous system, initially causing strong neurological stimulation and then progressive paralysis. In high doses, it leads to:
-Paralysis of muscles, including respiratory muscles
-Respiratory arrest
-Severe pain and collapse of the central nervous system
-Death within a short period of time
Epibatidine has been studied for its potential as a very powerful analgesic, but its extreme toxicity makes it practically useless in medicine. Due to its potency, it is considered one of the most deadly poisons in the world.
Political reactions
The five foreign ministers said the discovery refuted Moscow's official version that Navalny died of natural causes. They said the fact that Navalny was in custody under the full control of the Russian state showed that the authorities had the "means, motive and opportunity" to poison him.
Yulia Navalnaya, his wife, declared that the report scientifically confirms her early suspicions: "I knew it from the beginning, but now there is proof: Putin killed my husband."
British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper spoke of a “barbaric Kremlin project to silence Navalny’s voice.” Her French counterpart, Jean-Noël Barrot, said the discovery showed “Putin is willing to use banned weapons to maintain power.” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called the act “appalling” and accused Russia of using terrorist methods.
The five countries announced that they would take the matter to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), requesting an investigation into violations of the Chemical Weapons Convention and the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention.
A history of poisoning
Navalny was also poisoned in 2020 with the nerve agent Novichok while in Siberia. He was transported to Germany for treatment and survived. In 2021, he returned to Russia, where he was promptly arrested and sentenced to 19 years in prison in a trial described as politically motivated.
In December 2023 he was transferred to the IK-3 penal colony, known as the “Polar Wolf”. On February 16, 2024, the Federal Penitentiary Service unexpectedly announced his death, without giving a convincing explanation. The authorities refused to hand over the body to the family for several days. Thousands of citizens attended his funeral, despite official restrictions.
The latest revelation on epibatidine is expected to further increase international pressure on Moscow and deepen diplomatic tensions between Russia and the West./ Pamphlet
