Donald Trump has renewed threats to undermine NATO, saying the US will not protect allies who do not pay enough to maintain the alliance if he returns to the White House next year.
Speaking at a rally in South Carolina, the former US president said: “I was saying, 'Look, if they're not going to pay, we're not going to protect them, okay? And Biden, who said, 'Oh, this is so bad. This is so terrible'. No... nobody pays the bills. One of the heads of state asked that "does this mean that you will not protect us if we do not pay?".
Trump sparked outrage and alarm last week when he said he would encourage Russia to attack NATO members, which do not spend 2 percent of the EU's defense spending, theguardian reports.
Biden expressed his anger, telling reporters at the White House on Tuesday what he thought of Trump's comments.
"Can you imagine the former president of the United States saying that? The whole world has heard it. The worst thing is that he intends to do it. No other president in our history has bowed to a Russian dictator. Let me make this as clear as I can. I will never do it. For God's sake, it's stupid. Shy. Dangerous. Un-American", the 81-year-old claimed.
In Brussels, Jens Stoltenberg, the general secretary of NATO, said that Trump with this statement threatened to "undermine the credibility of NATO".
