US President Donald Trump said Chinese leader Xi Jinping offered to help resolve the conflict between the US and Iran during their talks on Thursday. China has close ties with Iran and is the number one consumer of Iranian oil.
"President Xi would like to see a deal made. He would like, he would like to see a deal made. And he offered. If I can help in any way, I would like to help. He would like to see the Strait of Hormuz open," Trump told Fox News' Sean Hannity in a taped interview after the first day of high-profile discussions.
The president was widely expected to urge China to pressure Iran to accept a peace deal and open the Strait of Hormuz, a key oil route that has been largely closed because of the war.
A US statement on the meeting said China agreed that the strait "must remain open" and that China is opposed to militarization and a tax on the strait, points that largely align with China's previous statements.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a separate interview with NBC News on Thursday that the US did not ask for China's help and that we do not need their help.
"We raised the issue to make it clear what our position is and to make it clear for them to understand, because it's logical that we would talk about it, given how dominant this issue is ," Rubio told NBC.
