UK Treasury Secretary resigns after Bangladesh corruption allegations

Tulip Siddiq, the niece of former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, resigned as UK Treasury Secretary on Tuesday amid allegations of links to Bangladeshi finances, The New York Times reported.

Siddique, who held the post of financial services and anti-corruption minister, faced increasing scrutiny over her ties to her aunt, who was ousted as Bangladesh's prime minister last year.

However, she has dismissed the accusations as politically motivated and maintains that she has done nothing wrong.

As economic secretary to the Treasury – a role she took on when Labour came to power in July last year – Siddiq was tasked with tackling corruption in financial markets, including combating money laundering and illicit financing.

Following Siddiq's resignation, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer appointed Emma Reynolds as Economic Secretary to the Treasury, Reuters news agency reported.

Reynolds, 47, was elected to office in the 2024 national election, which saw the Labour Party return to power after 14 years in opposition. She currently represents the Wycombe constituency in southern England and previously served as an MLA for another seat in central England between 2010 and 2019.
