Negotiators between Israel and Hamas have reached a preliminary ceasefire agreement, pledging that a final agreement could be reached within the next 24 hours. The ceasefire, if approved, would end the more than year-long war in Gaza.
The agreement includes a period of ceasefire and the immediate release of a dozen Israeli hostages, two officials involved in the talks said Tuesday. However, the deal needs Israeli approval to go into effect.
The deal is scheduled to be approved by the Israeli cabinet. A Qatari official confirmed that talks were finalizing the final details, however, they must await an official announcement to make it possible to reach an agreement.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken also expressed optimism that a ceasefire could be reached very soon, adding that he hoped it would be concluded before President-elect Donald Trump is inaugurated at the end of January.
What does the agreement include?
The ceasefire plan is divided into several phases. In the first phase, Hamas will release dozens of hostages that were taken by Hamas militants on October 7, 2024. This phase also includes the possibility that some Palestinians will be able to return to their homes.
In the second phase, Hamas would release the remaining hostages in exchange for the release of about 1,000 Palestinian prisoners and a withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza. This would mark a lasting ceasefire.
Despite progress in the talks, the deal has faced some opposition, particularly from staunch allies of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has called the proposed deal “terrible” and threatened to resign if it is approved.
For now, negotiations continue and hopes are that a lasting agreement can be reached, ending the war in Gaza.
