"We must rearm", Denmark, Latvia and Lithuania appeal before the

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen declared today that "the most important thing now is to rearm Europe."

"I don't think we have much time. That's why we need to rearm Europe: spend, spend, spend on defense and deterrence," she said.

Asked about Macron's proposal on nuclear deterrence, she said: "Now we have to discuss everything, so all the good ideas on the table should be part of our discussion."

Meanwhile, Latvian Prime Minister Evika Siliņa said she hopes for "quick actions and really clear decisions" at today's summit, so that the bloc can focus on "strengthening our military industry."

She stressed that Ukraine must secure peace “through force, but without force … there will be no lasting peace,” as Russia would use this opportunity to rearm and in a few years … attack other countries again.

Siliņa was also asked about Macron's proposals, saying that no decisions have been made on the issue yet: " maybe we will have some discussions in our country too, because it is something new... so it is still too early to give clear answers ."

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda was one of the first European leaders to stop to talk to reporters on his way to today's European Council.

He said that "there is no need for explanations ... about how important this meeting is," emphasizing that Ukraine is buying us precious time every day, paying with its blood.

"It would be extremely irresponsible to waste this time and have lengthy discussions without a clear outcome, " he stressed.

Nausėda called for a more "flexible" approach to defense spending in fiscal deficit rules and for more support for Ukraine.

He also stated that the EU should strengthen its eastern flank to protect critical infrastructure from acts of sabotage, hybrid aggression and other forms of destabilization of border countries.

Asked about Macron's idea of expanding the French "nuclear umbrella", Nausėda said that this "would serve as a very serious means of deterrence against Russia".

The Lithuanian president also stressed that the EU must make decisions today, despite possible objections from Hungary or Slovakia, "because otherwise history will punish us."

"It's been going on too long, our inability to make decisions. And now is the time to act," he concluded.
