Suspicions of election manipulation in Romania, the court orders a recount of

The Constitutional Court of Romania has ordered a recount of the votes of the first round of the presidential elections in the country, which was unexpectedly won by the far-right candidate.

The constitutionalist said in a statement on November 28 that she "unanimously ordered the review and recount of the votes for the November 24 presidential elections".

The court in Bucharest said its decision is final.

The Central Election Commission will meet later in the day to discuss the court's decision.

Calin Georgescu, the far-right independent and pro-Russian candidate, scored a surprise victory in the first round of the election, taking nearly 23 percent of the vote.

Georgescu is expected to face Elena Lasconi, the center-right candidate and strong supporter of Euro-Atlantic integration, in the December 8 runoff, after both received more votes than the leftist prime minister and favorite, Marcel Ciolacu.

Without the support of any political party, Georgescut's campaign relied mainly on the social platform TikTok, where his account had 1.6 million likes.

In addition to expressing his political views, Georgescu also used TikTok to post videos of himself going to church, doing judo and running on a track.

Meanwhile, Romania's Supreme National Defense Council said after the court's decision that it had found evidence that "cyber attacks" were used to influence the outcome of the election.

Without mentioning Calin Georgescun by name, the council also accused the TikTok platform of giving "favored treatment" to a certain candidate.

The President of Romania has important decision-making powers, including on issues of national security and foreign policy.

Elected for a five-year term, the president also has the power not to accept party candidacies for prime minister and government appointments for judicial positions./ REL
