A macabre event has shocked Austria and Ukraine, after 21-year-old Danilo Kuzmin, the son of the deputy mayor of Kharkiv in Ukraine, was tortured for hours and then burned alive inside a car in Vienna.
It is suspected that the motive for the crime is related to the theft of cryptocurrencies worth around $200,000.
Danilo Kuzmin had been living in Vienna for several years, studying. His father, Serhiy Kuzmin, is the deputy mayor of Kharkiv. The family lost contact with the young man on November 25, 2025, after they noticed that two of his digital wallets had been emptied. After that, he was officially declared missing.
In the early hours of November 26, firefighters were called to the Donaustadt district of Vienna after a resident reported a car burning under a bridge. Firefighters extinguished the flames of a black Mercedes with Ukrainian license plates, which turned out to be owned by the Kuzmin family, and found a charred body in the back seat.
A melted metal can smelling of gasoline was found inside the vehicle, although the car used diesel, which strengthens suspicions that the fire was deliberately set.
The autopsy revealed shocking details, about 80% of the victim's body was severely burned, while numerous injuries from the blows were found, including head injuries and broken teeth. The lack of soot in the lungs reveals that the young man was dead or unconscious at the moment the car was engulfed in flames. Austrian police have described the incident as intentional murder and continue investigations to identify the perpetrators.
