Experts warn that current and emerging artificial intelligence tools could be used to create biological weapons capable of causing a global pandemic.
Earlier this year, some of the world's most important technology and counterterrorism figures gathered to analyze a hypothetical scenario: a global pandemic caused by a new enterovirus, deliberately created by a group of extremists using AI.
The conclusion they reached was frightening: This scenario, according to a group of 14 experts who examined AI safeguards in the life sciences, is entirely possible in the coming years. Their report, reported by Euronews, emphasizes that the fictitious simulated pandemic, with 850 million cases and 60 million lives lost, was “deeply alarming” and requires “immediate action” to prevent such possibilities.
AI technologies are transforming medicine, accelerating the development of drugs and vaccines. But at the same time, experts warn of the risk that the same tools could be used to create new pathogens with devastating potential. The group, brought together by the Nuclear Threat Initiative and the Munich Security Conference, warns that the rapid advancement of AI is “breaking down barriers” that previously made it difficult for malicious actors to create biological weapons.
Currently, it would be technically possible to use existing biological and AI-based tools to engineer new pathogens with pandemic potential. Even more worrying is the fact that current security systems are unprepared for such a challenge.
