Erdogan begins the "elimination" of opponents, the mayor of Istanbul

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan seems to be trying to eliminate from politics all possible opponents who could harm him in the future. This time his focus has returned to Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, one of his main political opponents.

Turkish justice has targeted Imamoglu again, and this targeting is likely to cause new obstacles to his political ambitions. Ekrem Imamoglu, a member of the Republican People's Party (CHP), Turkey's largest opposition party, is being prosecuted on suspicion of rigging a tender process in late 2015 when he was mayor of Beykinduzu, a district of Istanbul.

The first session on this matter started this Thursday, in the absence of Imamoglu. The mayor of Istanbul, who is considered a possible candidate for the 2028 presidential elections, is threatened with seven years in prison and disqualification.

Ekrem Imamoglu has been targeted by Turkish authorities since 2019 and his landslide victory over Erdogan and his party, which had controlled Turkey's largest city for 25 years.

His election was annulled, so that the vote could be repeated and a mayor elected with an even greater majority.

Imamoglu has been systematically targeted by Erdogan. In mid-December, he was sentenced to two years and seven months in prison, along with a ban on political activity, for "insulting" members of the High Election Commission. He appealed the decision and is still in office.
