Israeli air strikes on Gaza have killed at least 404 people, with the death toll rising by the hour,
Palestinian health authorities said, as the strikes hit dozens of targets early Tuesday, ending a weeks-long standoff over an extension of a ceasefire that halted fighting in January.
The Palestinian militant group Hamas issued a statement accusing Israel of violating the ceasefire.
Initially, 330 people were killed, while as the hours passed, the figure increased to 404.
The attacks were reported in multiple locations, including northern Gaza, Gaza City and Deir al-Balah, Khan Younis and Rafah in the central and southern Gaza Strip. Palestinian health ministry officials said many of the dead were children.
The Israeli military, which said it hit dozens of targets, reported that the attacks would continue for as long as necessary and would extend beyond airstrikes, raising the prospect that Israeli ground troops could resume fighting.
