Diplomatic fever has begun after President Donald Trump announced he will meet with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, next week in Alaska, as European leaders rushed to state the terms of the meeting and ensure that Ukraine is not left out of discussions about its future.
European officials presented their views to US Vice President Vance. Leaders of several European countries said afterwards that, while supporting Trump's diplomatic efforts, any peace talks must be preceded by a ceasefire and Ukraine itself must actively participate.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was not listed as a participant in the Alaska summit, which will take place on Friday between Trump and Putin.
However, the White House has not completely ruled out Zelensky's participation in some meetings, according to two sources familiar with the matter, as reported by CNN.
A White House official stressed that anything involving Zelensky would likely happen after the Trump-Putin meeting.
US Ambassador to NATO: Zelensky may attend Trump-Putin summit
It is "possible" that Volodymyr Zelensky will attend the one-on-one meeting between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump in Alaska, US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker said in an interview with CNN.
He stressed that "the war in Ukraine must end. We can save thousands of lives with an agreement, with communication between the two sides, with the meetings that President Donald Trump will have in Alaska "with one or two of the warring parties. I think it's full of prospects," said US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker, emphasizing that "the only one who can achieve a result is President Trump," whom he described as a "peacemaker."
Vance: The agreement will satisfy neither Russia nor Ukraine
"Neither Russia nor Ukraine will be happy with the deal," Vice President JD Vance said in an interview with Fox News.
Kallas: "The temporarily occupied territories belong to Ukraine."
"As we work for a just and lasting peace, international law is clear: all temporarily occupied territories belong to Ukraine," said EU High Representative Kaia Kallas.
"Durable peace also means that aggression cannot be rewarded. Russia's war aims go beyond territorial conquest: Moscow launched this conflict to destroy Ukraine and undermine European security. An agreement must not become a platform for new Russian aggression against Ukraine, the transatlantic alliance and Europe," he stressed.
EU officials hold video conference on Ukraine
The permanent representatives of EU member states will meet this afternoon via videoconference for an extraordinary meeting on Ukraine, European sources in Brussels said.
Ambassadors from 27 countries will be briefed on the summit on Ukraine held yesterday in Kent, which was also attended by US Vice President JD Vance, ahead of the August meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin.
Medvedev: "Europeans are hindering efforts to resolve the war"
"While Euro-idiots are trying to block American efforts to help resolve the Ukrainian conflict, the dying Bandera regime (Ukraine, ed.) is panickingly recruiting the most evil scum of humanity to the front lines," Dmitry Medvedev, deputy secretary of the Russian Security Council, wrote on Telegram.
Zelensky: "Thanks to EU leaders, the end of the war should be just"
“The end of the war must be just, and I am grateful to all those who now stand with Ukraine and our people for peace in Ukraine, which protects the vital security interests of our European peoples,” said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. “Ukraine appreciates and fully supports the statement of President Macron (France), Prime Minister Meloni (Italy), Chancellor Merz (Germany), Prime Minister Tusk (Poland), Prime Minister Starmer (United Kingdom), President Ursula von der Leyen (EU Commission) and President Stubb (Finland) for peace in Ukraine.”
Merz: "I hope Zelensky will attend the Trump-Putin summit"
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has urged Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to attend Friday's summit between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin to find a solution to the conflict in Ukraine. "We hope and assume that the Ukrainian government, as well as President Zelensky, will participate in this meeting."
