European Commission President Von der Leyen rejects suggestion that an independent Europe could somehow weaken relations with the US.
Referring to Rubio's speech, she notes that "an independent Europe is a strong Europe, and a strong Europe creates a stronger transatlantic alliance."
She says that "over many decades, Europe's security has not always been seen as our primary responsibility," but insists that "this has fundamentally changed."
"It must be admitted that a little shock therapy was needed and some lines were crossed that can no longer be crossed. But at least, on what is needed, we all agree and we are delivering the result," she says.
Referring to some recent decisions on the EU's SAFE program to rearm the continent and for further loans for Ukraine, von der Leyen said that this is a real European awakening and this is just the beginning of what we need to do.
She says the EU needs to implement Europe's mutual defense clause, something German Chancellor Merz mentioned yesterday, to understand what it means in practice.
The European Commission President also says the EU needs to move faster, increasingly turning to qualified majority voting instead of unanimity, to bypass individual countries seeking to block its decision-making.
She said that Europe needs a new security strategy to "recalibrate the way we use our entire policy toolbox."
"We in Europe must be ready and willing to use our strength decisively and proactively to protect our security interests."
"We need a new doctrine for this with a simple goal of ensuring that Europe can defend its territory, economy, democracy and way of life at all times. Because that is ultimately the true meaning of independence," she stressed.
