Iran's state television reported that naval exercises organized by Iran with the participation of Russia and Oman and observed by nine other countries began today in the Indian Ocean.
English-language Press TV, an Iranian government-controlled channel, says the exercises, dubbed "IMEX 2024," are aimed at enhancing "collective security in the region, expanding multilateral cooperation, and demonstrating goodwill and capabilities to maintain peace, friendship and maritime security".
Participants will practice tactics to ensure the security of international maritime trade, protect sea lanes, enhance humanitarian measures and share information on rescue and relief operations, the report added.
The drills come amid heightened tensions in the region as Israel battles Iran-backed terror groups Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon, while other proxies of Tehran are launching attacks on Israel from Syria and Iraq, and on ships in the Gulf. Red.
