Monday's leading Iranian newspapers portrayed an Islamic Republic preparing for the possibility of renewed conflict with the United States and Israel.
A day after Tehran presented a counterproposal to the US, which was rejected by US President Donald Trump, Iranian media put the spotlight on military preparations, warnings of high costs to Washington in the event of escalation, and the message that Iran will not back down in the face of pressure.
The conservative newspaper Kayhan, widely considered close to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, published the front-page headline: " Islamic Revolutionary Guards' missiles and drones target enemy ships and bases."
"Resalat," a conservative Islamist newspaper pro-Khameneit, wrote that "America's war machine" could not withstand "Iran's powerful wave of offensive defense in the Persian Gulf."
The newspaper also included a column about "revenge for Beirut," in reference to Iran's ally, Lebanese Hezbollah, which is in conflict with Israel.
The state-run newspaper "Iran" stressed that "negotiations are not surrender" and that "the ball is in Washington's court," after Tehran sent its response to the US through Pakistani intermediaries.
Meanwhile, the conservative-leaning Hamshahri Tehran published a leading article on the "war zone in Iran," with references to "fast attack boats," "sea mines," and "underground missile cities."
"Jam-e Jam," a newspaper affiliated with state broadcaster IRIB, published the headline "Commander's Directives," reporting that Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei had communicated new measures and decisions for a tough confrontation with opponents.
"The armed forces are awaiting the order to shoot," the newspaper wrote.
