Following the 8.8 magnitude earthquake in Russia and the tsunami in Japan, warnings were issued across the Pacific.
But what does this mean for cruise ships at sea?
According to experts, tsunamis are usually harmless to ships in deep waters, as the waves pass beneath them without causing serious turbulence. However, when they approach the coast, they turn into dangerous water masses.
Captains have been instructed to avoid shallow waters, harbors and bays. Many cruise ships are being told to sail at depths greater than 180 meters (about 55 feet) for safety reasons.
Evacuations, route changes and absolute panic
Some ships have set off without passengers as priority is given to getting them out of dangerous areas. Videos have circulated on social media of holidaymakers running into Hawaiian ports trying to board ships.
According to Cruise Hive and Cruise Passenger, many companies are considering changes to itineraries or cancellations of arrivals at ports that may have suffered damage from the waves.
Cruise ships have specialized teams that constantly monitor the course of the tsunami and maintain communication with local authorities for instructions. Moving away from the epicenter and adjusting course are the main precautions until the situation stabilizes.
