Trump punishes India, 25% trade tariffs and a fine for energy and weapons

US President Donald Trump has announced that the US will impose a 25% tariff on goods from India plus an additional "punishment" for the country buying weapons and energy from Russia during the war in Ukraine.

Washington has set an August 1 deadline for countries around the world to reach agreements on trade, including India, amid the US president's all-out global tariff war.

While calling Delhi a "friend," Trump used his Social Truth platform to criticize India's trade policies and said the White House would impose a 25% tariff "plus a penalty" of an unspecified amount.

He said the US had a "massive" trade deficit with India, when imported goods exceeded exports, and linked its "massive" purchases of military equipment and energy from Russia to Vladimir Putin's war in Ukraine.

Criticizing Indian tariffs applied to US imports as "too high," he also accused Narendra Modi's government of implementing non-monetary barriers to trade that were among the most "difficult and annoying" in the world.

Trump wrote: "They have always bought the vast majority of their military equipment from Russia and are the largest buyer of energy from Russia, along with China, at a time when everyone wants Russia to stop the killing in Ukraine."

"Therefore, India will pay a 25% tariff, plus a penalty, starting August 1," Trump announced.

Figures compiled by Washington show that US goods trade with India is estimated at $129.2 billion in 2024, making it the US's 10th largest trading partner. The US goods trade deficit was worth $45.7 billion.

Trump's criticism of India comes as he ratchets up pressure on Moscow amid growing frustration with Putin's war in Ukraine. Trump had claimed before his inauguration in January that he would be able to end the conflict within 24 hours of taking office.

Dozens of major countries around the world remain locked in negotiations with Washington, just days before an Aug. 1 deadline set by Trump to reach a trade deal. The White House has threatened to unilaterally impose higher tariffs if a deal cannot be reached.
