Felipe and Letizia of Spain, before a difficult farewell / Will there be tears?

King Felipe and Queen Letizia must prepare for a difficult separation.

Princess Leonor is leaving Spain. In August 2023, Princess Leonor began her three-year military training. After her first year in the Army, she is now in the Navy and graduating with the Marine Corps. The theoretical part of the sea is now over, now comes the practical. The eldest daughter of King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia embarks on a five-month sea voyage.

According to the palace, on board the training ship "Juan Sebastián de Elcano", the heir to the throne of Spain "will experience life at sea firsthand and get to know the traditions of sailing". Although the separation may not be easy for them, Queen Letizia and King Felipe still insist on saying goodbye to Princess Leonor.

According to Billed Blades, Princess Leonor will visit Tenerife, Mallorca, Brazil, Uruguay, Chile, Peru, Panama, Colombia and the Dominican Republic in the next five months before heading to the US. "This trip will also serve to spread the image of Spain abroad and to strengthen relations with other countries," said the official statement from the Spanish Palace. The journey will be adventurous – but Felipe and Letizia's daughter shouldn't expect any special treatment.

"From the time they wake up in the morning until they go to bed at night, they always have a job to do," announces Pedro Cardona Suanzes, head of the Maritime Academy in Marín.

The alarm clock for Princess Leonor and her companions goes on board each day at 6:45, then it's time to shower, make the bed and eat breakfast before the uniform is checked to make sure it's pristine white at 7:30 am.

Everyone should be back in bed by 10.45pm at the latest.
