Around 100 German farmers on Thursday night blocked the country's finance minister and vice chancellor, Robert Habeck, on a ferry as he returned from a holiday on the North Sea resort island of Halih Hooge.
Farmers protesting the phasing out of an oil subsidy blocked the ferry in Schlitziel, northern Germany. The farmers' action came after the German government partially abandoned plans to cut fuel subsidies for the agricultural sector.
The oil subsidy for farmers will be phased out by 2026 and not all at once, as originally planned.
The police tried to disperse the revolted crowd by using tear gas, but the measures taken by them failed, as did attempts to hold talks with the protesters.
After that, the minister decided to stay on board the ferry and return to Halih Hooge. After calm was restored, the minister was able to return to the mainland at 03:50.
Although Habeck managed to return to Germany, the farmers have not stopped and are planning a week of anti-government demonstrations from January 8 to 15, supported by their union.
Meanwhile, their attempt to obstruct the ferry on which the Minister of Finance was traveling was considered a shameful act by other members of the government cabinet.
"With all due respect to the culture of protest, no one should remain indifferent in the face of such a shock to political morality," Chancellor Scholz wrote on Platform X, referring to the Habeck incident.
Agriculture Minister Cem Ozdemir, who pledged to farmers to change the government's plans, told ZDF this morning that the actions of "a minority of people who do not act in favor of German agriculture but have dreams of rebellion are not acceptable." .
Foreign Minister Analena Burbock (Greens) and Interior Minister Nancy Fesser (Social Democratic Party) also denounced the form of the protest, calling it a "violation of the limits of democracy".
