An unusual way of doing profitable business has been found by a cartel in the Mexican state of Michoacán, who forcefully forced citizens to use WiFi service that they initially offered for free.
After setting up their makeshift antennas, Los Viagras cartel members told around 5,000 local residents that they had to pay 400 to 500 pesos (21 to 26 euros) a month to use the WiFi service or they would they killed.
The cartel's narco-antennas were erected in several cities and built with stolen equipment, but the group managed to earn more than 100,000 euros a month.
Locals were terrorized into signing these exorbitant contracts at gunpoint, but Mexican authorities have not recorded any such deaths.
Mexican cartels have long used a network of radio towers and makeshift internet, and investigators say the gangs are becoming de facto monopolies of the service.
In some regions they even impose taxes on staple foods and imported products, while they have penetrated the lucrative avocado market.
