President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that he had ordered the US military to take "decisive and forceful" action against the Houthis in Yemen.
The president announced in a post on Truth Social that he ordered airstrikes against "bases, leaders, and missile defense systems" as a means to protect American assets and restore "freedom of navigation."
"No terrorist force will prevent American merchant and naval vessels from navigating freely in the world's waterways," Trump wrote.
"To all Houthi terrorists, your time is up and your attacks must stop starting today. If not, hell will fall upon you in a way you have never seen before!" he added.
Trump also included a message for Iran, warning Tehran not to provide support to Houthi forces. "If you do, be careful, because America will hold you fully accountable, and we will not treat you kindly!"
Earlier, the Houthi Al Masirah TV network reported that an attack had been carried out in the capital Sanaa, without further details.
Later, according to the Houthis, 18 people were killed and many injured as a result of US and UK airstrikes on the Yemeni capital, Sanaa.
According to US reports, the attacks were carried out against the Houthi's large arsenal, parts of which are buried under the Red Sea, "could continue for several days and escalate depending on the militants' response."
The New York Times notes that there are even advisers on the US National Security Council who are pushing for even more aggressive attacks against the Houthis to force them to lose much of the territory they have taken in the northern part of the country.
