The European Union has had a wrong stance from the beginning: more focused on avoiding escalation with Russia than on helping Ukraine win.
Oleksandra Matvijchuk, the Ukrainian jurist and Nobel Peace Prize winner, has given Europe a direct and alarming message: Vladimir Putin will not wait for you to strengthen your defenses, because his war has already begun within European territory.
In an interview with international media during the "Grand Continent" summit, Matvijchuk emphasizes that the EU's policy of "escalation management" has failed, and now is the time for strategic decision-making, not survival tactics.
According to her, the current approach to the war, which aims to help Ukraine not collapse, but not win, is not only insufficient, but also dangerous for Europe itself. “ We are living in a time when some invisible drones can paralyze your airports, markets and institutions. The war is no longer just tanks and bombs, it is cyber, economic, psychological. And it has entered Poland, Germany, France, silently, ” warns Matvijchuk.
She sharply criticizes the way the EU has chosen not to seriously confront the Russian threat and to try to maintain “diplomatic balances”, instead of investing in Ukraine’s victory. “ This is no longer just a Ukrainian war. If Putin does not stop in Kiev, he will be knocking on your doors sooner than you think, and he will not give you years to prepare yourself ”, she says.
Matvijchuk raises another moral dilemma: the concept of “never again” – which for Ukraine means fighting to never again experience concentration camps, extermination and torture – for fed-up Europeans, she says, seems to mean only “not for us, but let it happen somewhere else”.
In a Europe where many still hope that a deal with the aggressor can bring peace, she reminds us: “ Russia’s appetite is not quenched by concessions. It is strengthened by our silence and fear.
