Japanese government lowers alert level, Tsunami warning becomes advisory

Following the powerful earthquake that struck the northeastern coast of Japan, Japanese authorities have announced a reduction in the alert level from a tsunami warning to a tsunami advisory. The decision was made after recent analyses showed that the potential waves are expected to be lower than initial estimates.

The Japan Meteorological Association had issued a tsunami warning after the earthquake struck three prefectures in northeastern Japan, including evacuation orders for about 90,000 residents.

What does "tsunami advisory" mean?

According to the Japanese warning system: Tsunami warning means a real risk of flooding and damage to buildings located in low-lying coastal areas. This level requires immediate evacuation.

The advisory means that there may be waves up to 1 meter, dangerous for people at sea, but without major risk to buildings on land.

With the alert level lowered, the Japanese government emphasizes that there should be no complacency, and citizens have been advised not to approach coastal waters, as sudden waves could continue for hours.
