Pope Francis' doctor at the Rome hospital speaks out: At one point he was

The head of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis, was so close to death at one point during his treatment for pneumonia in a Rome hospital that a team of doctors considered ending the treatment so he could die in peace, the head of his medical team, Sergio Alfieri, said today.

According to him, after a respiratory crisis on February 28, in which the Pope almost choked on vomit, there was a real risk that he would not survive.

"We had to choose whether to stop there and let him go or continue with all possible medications and therapies, with the greatest risk of damaging his other organs," Affieri, a doctor at the Gemelli hospital in Rome, told Corriere della Sera.

Alfieri said they ultimately decided on the latter.

"For days we risked damaging the Pope's kidneys and bone marrow, but we continued the therapy anyway. His body responded well and the infection subsided," Alfieri said, adding that Massimiliano Strapetti, the Pope's personal physician, sent him a message at the moment of greatest crisis not to give up.

When he saw him emerge from his room on the tenth floor of the hospital dressed in white, Alfieri said it felt like the man in front of him had become pope again. Pope Francis, 88, returned to the Vatican on Sunday after being hospitalized with pneumonia since Feb. 14. Doctors recommended he rest for another two months to fully recover.
