Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Russia is ready to reach a new Black Sea agreement if Washington 'orders' Zelensky to respect it.
Each side criticized the other for the collapse in 2023 of a previous agreement aimed at guaranteeing the safety of commercial shipping in the Black Sea after Russia sent tens of thousands of troops to Ukraine in February 2022, Reuters reports.
"We will need clear guarantees. And given the sad experience of agreements only with Kiev, guarantees can only be the result of an order from Washington to Zelensky and his team to do one thing and not the other ," Lavrov said in televised comments.
Reuters noted that Lavrov's comments indicated that Russia will seek a further tightening of US pressure on Zelensky before agreeing to a naval ceasefire, which Washington says would be an important step towards a more comprehensive ceasefire.
