What an unusual week. It's become difficult to follow the message coming from the White House.
Just hours after threatening to hit Iran "very hard" after three consecutive nights of attacks, Donald Trump declared the war was over. The US president is once again bringing up the idea of a near-term deal, which he has been talking about for weeks, although nothing concrete has materialized so far.
"I've given up trying to follow this"
A clear change has been noticed among Middle Easterners in the way Donald Trump's posts on the Truth Social platform are perceived.
In early April, when he warned that "an entire civilization will die tonight," many people were scared.
Dozens of followers were messaging me on social media, alarmed and worried. However, just a few hours later the ceasefire was announced.
Now, some of those same people react with funny emojis when I share Donald Trump updates. “I’ve given up trying to follow this,” wrote one Dubai resident.
Have we been here before?
The news that the third night of US attacks on Iran was called off is undoubtedly a welcome development for people living in the region.
However, the idea that the war will soon come to a definitive and clear end remains hard to believe for residents who are closely following developments.
For many of them, this situation seems familiar. They have seen the American president present a picture several times before that seems far from the reality of events on the ground in the Middle East.
