The end of Putin or the consolidation of power, what will change after the death

The events of the last few hours have reopened the debate about how much the West should hope for the end of Putin.

Images of the wreckage of the plane carrying the leader of the Wagner group, Evgeny Prigozhin, and one of his top commanders, Dmitry Utkin, remind Russia and the world that President Vladimir Putin does not tolerate traitors.

Although the dynamics that led to the downing of the plane are not yet clear, it is plausible to argue that the Kremlin or figures connected to it are involved in what appears to be the latest in a long series of takedowns.

The June 23 coup attempt and the humiliation suffered by the Tsar could not go unanswered, especially since the hundreds of kilometers of march by Prigozhin's mercenaries exposed for the first time the cracks in Putin's regime and raised questions about his ability to survivor of the war with Ukraine. However, as the "severing" of Wagner's head apparently strengthens the internal front and indicates the end reserved for "traitors", it cannot be ruled out that the possible crash of the plane could take the form of a blow to the beehive with consequences unpredictable.

"If the news of Prigozhin's death is confirmed, we will organize a second march in Moscow. Let it be a lesson to all. It is necessary that things be done to the end. He was the most promising politician in Russia, but he got scared and gave up. So he signed his death warrant." These are some of the messages displayed on the Telegram channels used by the "musicians" of the paramilitary group that evoke the possibility of retaliation.

Anton Gerashchenko, an adviser to the Ukrainian interior minister, published a post on X, the social network formerly known as Twitter, in which he claimed that "Wagner's mercenaries will take revenge on Putin and Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu for the death of their leaders", adding that two regions are already in a state of readiness.

The events of the last few hours have reopened the debate about how much the West should hope for the end of Putin. In recent days, the Wall Street Journal published a long article on the scenarios that could happen with the fall of the czar. Exiled chess player and political opponent Garry Kasparov declares that the Russian president "will continue the conflict in Ukraine to the end, to the last dollar, to the last soldier. For him, war is the only way to keep power."

However, the economic daily points out that in Washington and other Western capitals the dominant attitude towards the regime's internal turmoil is one of caution. The takeover of the Kremlin by an even more radical and less predictable Russian nationalist is among the scariest scenarios considered. Indeed, the prospect of a Russian collapse and its possible breakup into nuclear-armed states is giving policymakers around the world sleepless nights. / Adapted "Pamphlet" from "InsideOver"
