A ship with immigrants sinks in the Drina river, 7 people are still wanted

A boat carrying migrants trying to cross from Serbia to Bosnia and Herzegovina sank in the Drina River overnight, Serbian Interior Minister Ivica Dacic said on August 22.

" This morning, around 05:00, the border police in Llubovi were informed by the border authorities of Bosnia and Herzegovina, but also by the citizens, that during the night a ship with immigrants sank in the Drina. They were trying to cross the river from Serbia from the town of Dërlaca to the municipality of Llubovija and Orlić to the municipality of Zvornik", said Dačič, according to the announcement.

Immediately after this announcement, members of the police and the Department for Emergency Situations went to the scene and checks are being carried out in the river, Serbian authorities said.

According to the emigrants who came ashore, there were said to be 25 people in the sunken ship. Police, firefighters and rescue teams found 18 people on the shore, including three children, the Serbian MBP said.

Serbian authorities said that Serbian police, members of the Department for Emergency Situations, diving members of the Serbian Gendarmerie, but also officials from Bosnia are participating in the search.

Serbia is part of the "Balkan route" through which immigrants pass to go to Western Europe. In the last ten years, at least 40 migrants have lost their lives in the Drina river while trying to cross it, according to Radio Free Europe data until February 2024.

Last year, more than 100,000 immigrants passed through Serbia, or 12 percent less than in 2022, according to data from the Serbian Commissariat for Refugees and Migration. From this, the police station said on August 2 that the number of immigrants who have passed through Serbia this year is 80 percent lower than in 2023./ REL
