Israeli military intelligence chief resigns, takes responsibility for October 7

Israel's military intelligence chief resigned yesterday as he took responsibility for the failure of border defenses in the October 7 attack.

General Aharon Haliva, who has served in the Israeli army since 1985, announced in April that he would retire. He is among several senior Israeli commanders who said they had failed to predict and prevent the deadliest attack in Israel's history.

"The failure of the intelligence agencies was my fault ," Haliva said during the resignation ceremony on Wednesday as he called for a national investigation "in order to study" and "fully understand" the reasons that led to the war between Israel and Hamas. .

The October 7 attack severely tarnished the reputation of the Israeli military and intelligence services, which were previously seen as invincible by Palestinian armed groups such as Hamas.

In the early morning hours of October 7, after an intense rocket attack, thousands of fighters from Hamas and other groups broke through the security barriers around Gaza, surprising Israeli forces and striking communities in southern Israel.

About 1,200 Israelis and foreigners were killed in that attack, most of them civilians, and about 250 were taken hostage and taken to Gaza, according to Israeli records. About 109 hostages are believed to be still in Gaza, about a third of whom are thought to be dead.

The head of the armed forces, General Herzi Halevi, and the head of the Shin Bet intelligence agency, Ronen Bar, took responsibility after the attack, but have remained in office during the war in Gaza./VOA
