During a speech at the Pentagon, US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth quoted a biblical passage in a form that matches the version used in director Quentin Tarantino's film "Pulp Fiction."
The video of the moment quickly spread on social media, drawing attention for the unusual reference in an official context.
The original text from the Book of the Prophet Ezekiel in the Old Testament (25:17) says: “ I will execute great vengeance upon them, and I will punish them with fury; and they shall know that I am the Lord, when I lay my vengeance upon them .”
In Tarantino's film, the character Jules Winnfield, played by Samuel L. Jackson, recites an expanded and altered version of this passage before an act of violence. This version does not correspond to the biblical text and is an artistic creation of the script.
Hegseth used this very familiar variation from the film, including phrases like "the path of the righteous is difficult" and references to leading the weak "through the valley of the shadow of death."
“ The path of the righteous is difficult, because it is obstructed by selfish and tyrant wicked men. Blessed is the shepherd who, in the name of mercy and goodwill, leads the weak through the valley of darkness, for it is he who cares for his brothers and brings back the sons who have gone astray. And I will execute great vengeance on them with furious punishments, on those who have conspired to harm and poison my brothers. And you will know that my name is God, when my vengeance falls upon you ,” he said.
