YouTube suspends popular pro-Iranian channel over Trump mockery videos

YouTube has shut down a channel belonging to a pro-Iranian group that produced viral Lego-themed videos created by artificial intelligence and mocking US President Donald Trump.

The Google-owned platform announced this on Wednesday, sparking criticism online.

Explosive Media, a group of pro-Tehran creators that describes itself as independent but is widely suspected of ties to the Iranian government, gained online fame during the US-Iran war for animated videos that amassed millions of views.

"We terminated the channel for violating our policies against spam, deceptive practices and schemes,"  a YouTube spokesman told AFP without giving details. The channel was suspended on March 27, he added.

Explosive Media continues to post videos mocking U.S. military efforts on other tech platforms, including Elon Musk-owned X and Telegram. Meta's Instagram also removed the group's account, but another account with the same name was still active on the network on Wednesday.

Attacking YouTube, Explosive Media wrote on X: "Seriously! Are our Lego-style animations really violent?"

Satirical videos distributed massively

YouTube's suspension appears to have had limited impact on Explosive Media's reach, as their videos continue to be widely shared by other content creators on the platform.

The satirical videos, which exploit American popular culture, depict Trump with a large yellow head and as an old, isolated figure, prone to childish outbursts, and disconnected from reality.

After announcing a two-week ceasefire last week, the group posted a video on X with the caption: “TACO will always be TACO,” referring to the acronym “Trump always chickens out.”

With dramatic music in the background, the video features a Trump-like toy figure gathering with Arab leaders, throwing a chair at American military figures, while Iranian generals press a red button labeled "Back to the Stone Age," causing destruction across the Middle East.

These types of memes are emerging as an effective tool of information warfare, a phenomenon that analysts have called the "Legofication" of conflict propaganda.
