Bloody day in the Middle East: over 100 killed in Gaza, conflict spreads to Lebanon and Syria
At least 104 Palestinians were killed in Israeli airstrikes on the Gaza Strip on Sunday, hospital sources quoted by Al Jazeera said. More than a third of the victims were waiting for humanitarian aid, a scene that is increasingly repeated in a region where defenseless civilians have become targets of war. More than 30 people were killed in the Rafah area, near an aid center, while the Israeli army claims it fired at “suspects” who posed a threat, at a distance of one kilometer from the humanitarian target.
These episodes add to the tragic toll of a day that has seen intense attacks across the Gaza Strip, with the IDF reporting that it has hit around 90 targets in the past 24 hours. The targets include tunnels, weapons depots and alleged Hamas positions. However, the high number of civilian casualties casts serious doubt on the alleged “precision” of these operations. The Vatican has reacted through Cardinal Pietro Parolin, who has called legitimate the suspicion that the strike on a Christian church in Gaza may not have been an accident.
On the other hand, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation stated that it had warned citizens not to approach aid centers at night and in the early hours of the morning, an attempt to avoid casualties that, it said, did not occur near the foundation's own centers. But the brutal reality remains: dozens of hungry Palestinians have been killed while waiting for bread and water.
Meanwhile, tensions are spreading beyond Gaza. The Israeli military has killed a militant from Hezbollah’s elite units in southern Lebanon, in the Khiam area, claiming that he was trying to rebuild terrorist positions in violation of international agreements. Moreover, in a rare and disturbing act, dozens of Israeli Druze have crossed the border with Syria into the Golan Heights, clashing with Israeli soldiers and climbing over the border fence. The incident has alarmed military authorities, who consider this act a danger to troops and civilians.
In Syria, the situation remains dramatic in the southern province of Sweida. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), 940 people have been killed in one week, the vast majority of them Druze, including 182 summarily executed by regime forces. Israel has also killed 15 Syrian soldiers in its latest interventions. The European Union has welcomed the ceasefire announced in Syria and called for a broad and inclusive transition that respects the rights of all communities.
From the White House, US President Donald Trump declared that all three of Iran's nuclear facilities have been "destroyed or eliminated", a statement with major geopolitical implications that could further inflame regional tensions. At the same time, he announced that 10 more hostages in Gaza would soon be released, a development related to the negotiations taking place in Doha between Hamas and Israel, with US mediation for a 60-day ceasefire.
These developments highlight a frightening truth: the conflict in the Middle East is no longer just between two sides, but a multi-faceted war that is encompassing Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, Iran and beyond. And the highest price, as always, is paid by civilians. /Pamphlet
